FRANKFURT 2019

New
The new all-electric Vauxhall Corsa-e made its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week and sparked plenty of interest.
The biennial Frankfurt Motor Show isn’t just big, it’s positively gargantuan. Over-the-top stands can take up entire halls, large enough for cars to drive around inside them and the show’s sheer enormousness (is that even a word?) means visitors often use bicycles just to get around.

So with that in mind, it’s no surprise that making an impact with a new car at the Frankfurt Motor Show is no easy task. Nobody told Vauxhall’s all-new Corsa that however, as it stole the limelight in Germany making its world premiere to the eagerly-awaiting show attendees.
To be fair, the first pictures of the all-new Corsa have been seen already of course, but it’s one thing to see a photograph on paper or on a screen, quite another to see a car like this in the metal. We love the existing Corsa as much as the next 52,915 people who bought one last year but, just as whenever the new James Bond actor makes their first arrival on screen, it’s hard not to immediately fall in love with the newcomer. Well, George Lazenby aside that is.
Wider and lower than before, the all-new Corsa looks sharper, sleeker and more dynamic with some superb proportions, lovely flowing lines and great details. The all-electric Corsa-e version means that the range now boasts a choice of either conventional petrol or diesel engines or a 50kWh battery giving punchy performance (how does 0 to 62mph in just 8.1 seconds grab you?) and a range of 205 miles for zero emissions.
A contrast-colour roof and standard alloy wheels mean it looks the part and a long-list of on-board technology means there’s plenty of brains to go with that beauty too. Lane Assist, Automatic Cruise Control, adaptive LED headlights with high beam assist (a first for the class no less), automatic braking with pedestrian detection and a state-of-the-art touchscreen entertainment system (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, naturally) are all available, showing that Vauxhall’s engineers can hold their own up against Bond’s Q department.
Any suggestions that those same Vauxhall engineers are working on an ejector seat and rotating number plate for the Corsa’s options list will obviously be denied at the highest official levels.
A £500 reservation fee is all that’s needed to secure an order on an all-new Corsa-e and, to celebrate its arrival customers who reserve before 31 December 2019 will receive a free home charging kit when they take delivery of the car. Take it from us though, the Corsa-e will be one of the biggest cars to arrive in showrooms in 2020, so you’ll need to be quick.
And just in case there was any power left in the flashguns of the show photographers, the all-new Corsa wasn’t the only world premiere at Frankfurt. The new Astra and the Grandland X Hybrid4, Vauxhall’s first-ever plug-in hybrid, both made an appearance too – you can find out more details on these show-stopping stars here.
As Vauxhall’s first ever plug-in hybrid, the new Grandland X Hybrid4 isn’t a car that does anything by half measures. Ultra-low emissions? Check. Sports car performance? Check. Family car practicality, all-electric capability and the added flexibility of four-wheel drive. Check, check and, oh yes sorry, check.
The statistics come thick and fast for the Hybrid4 – 36g/km, 0 to 62mph in 6.1 seconds and an official combined fuel economy of 166mpg are numbers not to be taken lightly. State of the art plug-in hybrid technology means it can automatically select the most efficient form of power using the electric motor or petrol engine, both or sometimes none. In other words, it’s smarter than an undergraduate that knows all the answers on University Challenge.

The Vauxhall Astra needs no introduction. You already know this car. It’s been one of Britain’s top-selling and most loved cars for the past 40 years with more three million having left showrooms. More than a quarter of UK motorists have owned or driven one making it officially more British than the Queen’s Yorkshire puddings. Probably.

Continuing its availability in Hatchback and Sports Tourer body styles, the new Astra features a refreshed exterior design giving it the best aerodynamics in its class plus a new range of petrol and diesel engines and, for the first time at Vauxhall, a new nine-speed automatic gearbox. The result are emissions and fuel consumption reduced by up to 21 per cent compared to its predecessor starting from just 90g/km.
